Why Does the Steering Wheel Vibrate? Balance, Alignment or Rim?

Why Does the Steering Wheel Vibrate? Balance, Alignment or Rim?

Steering wheel vibration is one of the most common complaints we see. The speed and conditions under which it appears give important clues about the cause.

1. Wheel imbalance (80-120 km/h)

Vibration that starts in a certain speed range and fades as speed increases is usually caused by imbalance. It typically appears after a tyre change or when a balance weight falls off. The fix is quick and inexpensive.

2. Bent rim

Vibration that starts after hitting a pothole is often caused by a bent rim. The runout of the rim is measured on the balancing machine; suitable rims can be straightened.

3. Tyre deformation

Bulges, ply separation or flat spots from long periods of parking also cause vibration. In that case balancing alone is not enough and the tyre may need replacing.

4. Brake discs (only when braking)

If the vibration occurs only when braking, the discs may be warped.

5. Play in the front end

Worn tie rod ends, ball joints or control arm bushings cause vibration and knocking, especially on rough roads and under braking.

What to do

Ignoring vibration shortens the life of bearings, shock absorbers and tyres. In our workshop we first check balance and the rims, then carry out a front-end inspection if needed to identify the exact cause.
