What Is a Run-Flat Tyre? A Guide to Use and Care
Many BMW and MINI models and some Mercedes models come from the factory with run-flat tyres. The sidewall usually carries a marking such as RSC, ROF, SSR, ZP or MOE.
How do they work?
The sidewalls of a run-flat tyre are reinforced, so it can carry the car's weight even when all the air is lost. This allows you to drive to a safe place with a puncture.
How far can you drive on a flat?
Manufacturers typically allow about 80 km at a maximum of 80 km/h. Check your owner's manual for the exact figure.
Can they be repaired?
The inner structure of a run-flat tyre that has been driven without pressure may be damaged. A repair decision should only be made after the tyre has been removed and inspected from the inside.
Why the right equipment is needed
Because of their stiff sidewalls, run-flat tyres removed with an unsuitable machine can damage the rim, and the tyre pressure sensor (TPMS) can break. In our workshop we fit run-flat tyres with suitable equipment and balance them.
