How Is Wheel Alignment Done and How Long Does It Take?
When done correctly, wheel alignment is a planned procedure made up of several steps. Below is the process we follow in our workshop.
1. Initial assessment and check
We listen to the complaint and check tyre pressures and tyre wear. A short test drive is taken if needed.
2. Front-end inspection
The car is lifted and the tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings and bearings are checked for play. Any play is reported before the adjustment.
3. 3D measurement
Targets are mounted on the wheels and cameras measure camber, caster and toe on all four wheels at once. The results are compared with the manufacturer's values.
4. Adjustment
The values are brought into the tolerance range at the adjustment points. The steering wheel is locked in the centre while toe is set.
5. Check and handover
The values are measured again after adjustment, the results are shared and the car is tested before handover.
How long does it take?
On most cars an alignment takes 30-45 minutes. Rusted adjustment points, part replacement or four-wheel-drive vehicles can take longer. See our 3D wheel alignment page for details.
