How to Read a Tyre's Production Date: DOT Code Guide

A tyre's age matters as much as its tread depth. The DOT code on the sidewall shows when the tyre was produced.

How to read the DOT code

The last four digits of the letter and number group following "DOT" show the production date. The first two digits are the week and the last two are the year. For example, 2324 means the tyre was produced in the 23rd week of 2024.

Why does tyre age matter?

The tyre compound hardens and loses flexibility over time. Even with little use, an old tyre offers less grip, especially on wet roads. Fine cracks may appear on the sidewall.

When should tyres be replaced?

  • The general recommendation is to have tyres older than 5-6 years checked regularly and to replace them after 10 years at the latest.
  • If there are cracks, bulges or cuts on the sidewall, the tyre should be replaced regardless of age.
  • When buying new tyres, make sure the production date is recent.

We check the age and condition of the tyres during a tyre change.
