7 Ways to Make Your Tyres Last Longer
Tyres are the only part of the car in contact with the road. The following seven tips help you use your tyres safely for longer.
- Check the pressure monthly. Low pressure wears the shoulders, high pressure wears the centre. The correct value is usually shown on the label inside the driver's door.
- Do not neglect alignment. Poor alignment can wear out a tyre in a short time.
- Balance at every tyre change. Vibration causes uneven wear.
- Rotate your tyres. On same-size tyres, swapping front and rear every 10,000 km evens out wear.
- Avoid harsh acceleration and braking.
- Use season-appropriate tyres. Winter tyres wear quickly in summer heat.
- Monitor tread depth and tyre age. The legal minimum is 1.6 mm; replacement at 3 mm is recommended for safety. Tyres older than 5-6 years harden.
