How Is Headlight Aiming Done? Low and High Beam Height
Correctly aimed headlights light the road properly without dazzling oncoming drivers. Headlight aim is also one of the items checked at vehicle inspection.
How is headlight aiming done?
The car is placed on a level surface with correct tyre pressures and no load. A headlight aiming device is positioned in front of the headlight, and the cut-off line of the low beam and the focus of the high beam are measured. The values are corrected with the adjustment screws on the headlight.
The headlight levelling switch
Many cars have a levelling switch numbered 0 to 3 on the dashboard. It should be set to 0 when the car is empty and increased as load or passengers are added. If this switch is left in the wrong position, the headlights appear misaligned.
Why does headlight aim drift?
- Replacing a headlight or headlight unit
- An accident or front bumper repair
- Suspension changes or a change in ride height
- The bulb holder moving during a bulb change
