Bent Rim Repair: When Can a Rim Be Saved?
With low-profile tyres becoming widespread, bent rims have become more common. Most bent rims can be straightened.
How to tell if a rim is bent
- Steering wheel vibration that starts after an impact
- Slow, continuous air loss from the tyre
- A visible dent on the rim lip
Which rims can be straightened?
Bends on the inner or outer lip and slight out-of-roundness can usually be repaired. The runout is measured, the rim is straightened in a controlled way and then balanced.
When is replacement necessary?
Rims that are cracked, have been welded or are damaged at the hub should not be straightened, as they pose a risk at high speed. In these cases we recommend replacement.
